FAQ

  • A dermatologist is a doctor; he/she deals with skin disease. He prescribes medication and is qualified to deal with deeper layers of the skin such as the dermis and the hypodermis and he is also qualified to inject botox and fillers among other invasive techniques. A skin care therapist works on the epidermis which is the outermost layer of the skin using non-invasive methods. She will work only on healthy skin to maintain its glow, remove buildup layers of dead skin professionally, unclog the pores without harming the skin barrier and will perform professional facial massages that increase collagen and elastin production. A skin care expert will also guide you in the journey of creating and choosing the most adapted skin care routine to address your skin needs.

  • The epidermis does not contain blood vessels, so it gets hydrated from inside by diffusion from blood capillaries present in the dermis. But guess what? Your body has priorities and the skin is always last in priority; so if the body is lacking enough water then skin hydration will always
be the first to suffer (bare in mind that when you feel thirsty your body is already dehydrated!) So topical skin care creams, gels and serums feed and ‘water’ the epidermis from the ‘outside’.

  • From about age 25 the first signs of ageing start to appear: fine lines, wrinkles, loss of volume and loss of elasticity? Many of the causes are natural and cannot be altered; however other factors can cause skin to age prematurely. Natural causes of ageing: a loss of hyaluronic acid content, a reduction in sebum production, a reduction in antioxidants production, from age 25 collagen production decreases by 1% every year, reduced micro-circulation (meaning less efficient delivery of nutrition and oxygen to skin surface), reduction in size and number of lipid-storing cells resulting in skin sagging and loss of volume, hormonal influences and genetics. External causes: in a nutshell: OXIDATIVE STRESS releasing free radicals that are naturally caught and neutralised by antioxidants in the skin (whereas the importance of antioxidants).. But after age 25 the production of antioxidants and their ability to deactivate free radicals decreases. These free radicals cause premature ageing of the skin by damaging skin cells structure and breaking down hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin. Oxidative stress is triggered and accelerated by: the sun, pollution, smoking, bad nutrition and inappropriate skin care.

  • Fact: humans, unlike a lot of other species, can't see UV rays. If only we could! we would SEE how damaging it is to the skin!
Sunblock protects your skin from harmful UV rays, cuts your risk of developing skin cancer in half, prevents premature ageing of the skin, protects your skin from discoloration and breakdown of collagen and helps maintain an even skin tone. Note that sunscreens come in all forms and textures, even powder and dry mists! When choosing your sunblock choose the texture and brand you prefer but if you are living with us in Egypt you need one that is SPF 50+ and that is UVA and UVB.

  • I always recommend that you get a facial once a month, because nothing you do at home can replace professional attention. Once a month is the ideal time frame because our skin cells turnover cycle is 28 days long. Also our skin changes and does different things depending on the season and on our lifestyle changes; so having a monthly check-in with your skin care expert ensures you are getting gently and professionally the best treatment needed.

  • Right! But what you are actually doing is you are compromising the skin barrier by making it dry & dehydrated, which will lead to premature developpement of wrinkles and chronic inflammation. If your skincare products are causing you to breakout, you may be using the wrong products for your skin type or “too much” of the right products. Please seek advice from your skincare professional on choosing the right products for your skin rather than dehydrating your skin to death.

  • Buildup of dead skin cells is the main reason behind this dull, flakey skin appearance.
Other reasons are: dehydration, dryness and smoking. Get your professional monthly facial treatment and regularly make sure you’ve completely removed your make-up, avoid hot water and wear sunscreen daily.

  • After a good facial treatment your skin is often red, patchy and irritated (specially if you had a lot of black and white heads). It’s the day after that the glow really sets in. However sometimes it doesn’t end there: facial breakouts! Why? Steaming and facial massage causes the blood vessels in your skin to open, which is called ‘vasodilation’. This moves blockages in the pores to the surface of the skin causing more debris wanting to ‘leave’; excess sebum and oils are making their way out of your skin.. Which manifests in small breakouts. Don’t despair; this is a good thing and it means clearer skin is on the way.

  • On one end you have the 10 steps korean skincare routine regimen that is followed religiously and on the other hand you have someone washing their face with regular soap.. Sometimes. No matter where you fall in the spectrum, neither is necessarily ideal. Let’s face it: the endless choices on the market and the launch of a new treatment everyday on the 6 billion dollars skincare industry makes it hard to figure out where you should actually focus your time, energy and money. In my opinion skincare is tricky when it comes to choosing the right products that will properly address your skin needs; therefore always use the advice of your skincare professional, yet, it is simpler than what the beauty industry is trying to make it (but they gotta keep you consuming don’t they). So let’s cut through the noise and get back to the basics:
Morning routine: clean gently, tone to balance the skin’s PH levels, moisturise, protect from UV damage.
Night routine: clean properly to get rid of make-up residues, toxins and pollution, tone to balance the skin’s PH levels, load your skin with antioxidants, moisturise and don’t forget your under eyes.

I came back to Egypt in 2016 and founded Facials and Lashes by Nariman.
